Plant of the week: Narcissus cyclamineus ‘Tête â Tête’.

- Unlike last weeks Plant of the week Narcissus pseudonarcissus, ‘Tête â Tête’ is a cultivar bred to enhance its diminutive stance and bright flower colour. First registered in the 1940’s by Alec Grey, an English horticulturist credited with developing 110 cultivars, he was initially unimpressed by it.
- Whilst all its parents are unclear, the main one is the pure species N.cyclamineus. Native to north west Portugal & Spain its only 15cm tall. Its has unusual pendant flowers with a long trumpet (corona) and relaxed/folded back petals (perianth). Its now extremely rare.
- N.cyclamenius hybrids like ‘Tête â Tête’ do not need to be lifted and divided, freely producing offsets to flower year after year.
- Plant at twice bulb depth, in full sun/partial shade. Prefers moderately fertile well drained soil.
Did you know: Bit of Botany….its an allotriploid hybrid, meaning it has three sets of chromosomes derived from multiple parents.
